The question has been raised about why there are no camping spots along the long distance Mattabesett and Metacomet trails. I do not have the answer for that, but I know that camping is not permitted in most locations. This makes backpacking fairly impossible. However, if utilizing leave no trace camping and avoiding open fires, I don’t see why camping secretly would cause any problems. This info is at the risk of the user considering that it may not be permitted in many areas. It is highly recommened to secure permission to camp anywhere along these trails. This list does not imply permission to camp in these locations. Here are my suggestions for the best places to find renegade camping spots along the Mattabesett Trail (all suggested spots should be at least 100 ft from the trail to avoid detection).

From East along the CT River in Middletown to West along Lamentation Mountain.

1/10th mile south of bear Hill, stream may or may not be flowing.

Near 7 Falls close to Saybrook Rd, stream will be flowing.

South-end of Miller’s Pond.

Valley just west of Mount Pisgah, Chalker Brook may or may not be flowing.

Pond access, take RT 77 north and then the access rd to the left to reach pond number 241. I would suggest filling up water bottles and returning to camp along blue trail.

Cattail Shelter near RT 68, condition of shelter and water access unknown.

Access trail to Black Pond to fill bottles and then camp back up along blue trail.

Access trail from Mnt Higby to Adder Reservoir or ¼ mile north of Adder Reservoir where the blue trail approaches stream, water may or may not be flowing.

North-end of Bradley Hubbard Reservoir between Chauncey Peak and Lamentation Mountain.

Camping along the Metacomet Trail going from south to north:

Northwest-end of Merimere Reservoir.

Northeast section of Wassel Reservoir.

Steep trail access to Farmington Reservoir.

Western edge of Hartford Reservoir No. 6.

Northwest corner of Gale Pond.

Northeast corner of Lake Louise, mostly a swamp.

Near Tarrifville, north bank of the Farmington River.

Mostly dry ridgeline from there to the northern terminus of the Metacomet Trail that runs through CT. However, there could be some remote off-trail camping near the parking area at the northern terminus of the trail.

There have been some responses to why we posted this list.

According to the CFPA, camping is not permitted unless at designated locations. However, there are no designated locations along the M&M trails. For trails that require about a week to through-hike, this is irresponsible recreation management. It's long overdo to establish designated camping locations for the use of backpackers along a backpacker's trail.

If you would like to see the CFPA establish designated overnight camping locations along the longs-distance blue-blazed trails, please send an email to: conn.forest.assoc@snet.net .

In comparison, according to the Mass AMC there are designated camping spots along the M&M trails in Mass. The "delicate balance" between private landowner and permission to hike along these trails is similar in comparison to CT's, though the Mass AMC has still established designated camping. I do not recommend building shelters because of the cost of supplies and man-hours needed to construct, but simple clearings would be fine.

"There are 4 shelters and one camping area about a days hike apart north of Rt.9 in Amherst. We hope to establish one more north of Rt.2 in Erving between the Wendell SF shelter and Mt. Grace.
Pat H. Fletcher"
