Adventure Activities and Calories Burned (based on medium pace):

Horseback Riding: 250 calories/hour

Whitewater Kayaking: 400 calories/hour

Hiking: 400 calories/hour

Rock Climbing: 500 calories/hour

Backpacking with a heavy pack: 600 calories/hour

Mountain Biking: 600 calories/hour

Mountaineering: 800 calories/hour

Trail-Running: 800 calories/hour

Afterburn: This is the concept regarding the amount of calories burned after exercise as the body recovers and repairs itself. Anywhere between 5 and 40 calories are burned/hour for up to 30 hours depending upon the intensity of exercise.

Individualized Approach: For a more exact measurement of calories burned during your sport, you will need to know your weight, VO2 Max, average heart rate during the sport and time frame engaged in the sport. A great calculator can be found here: http://www.braydenwm.com/calburn.htm

Using this tool, I was able to determine that during a two-hour hammer on my mountain bike, I was able to expend a whopping 1900 calories!

Keep in mind that 3500 calories burned is equivalent to about one pound of fat. If you find that you are not losing as much weight as you should be burning, your muscle mass may be building and offsetting the weight loss. This is just fine, because it still means you are working toward better health and physical performance.
