One of the main issues with long distance trails such as the famous Appalachian Trail and the Metacomet Trail is that the land under and around these trails is not protected. The result has been hundreds of reroutes and a few trail closures. It is conceivable that one day the Appalachia Trail will be broken and unable to be through-hiked from north to south.
