This book is more for those that are professionals in the field of therapeutic recreation or adventure therapy, but it is also very insightful for outdoor professionals or those interested in psychology. Coming of Age, The Evolving Field of Adventure Therapy is an Association for Experiential Education publication edited by Scott Bandoroff and Sandra Newes. It is a compilation of presented articles from the 3rd International Adventure Therapy Conference covering traditional adventure therapeutic approaches such as psychodynamic and metaphor as well as more untraditional approaches such as Buddhist Psychology and The Wild Way.
Reading this book will give the non-clinical person an insight into the mechanisms for change that are associated with wilderness, adventure, and solitude. Even though these mechanisms for change are brought to a much higher potential with trained facilitators, a non-professional may use these insights to enhance their experience of the outdoors. Likewise, a traditional guide service may employ these practices in a more subtile way to enrich their client's experience.
