For those of us spending much time in the woods, we get to see the gradual transformation from stark open winter woodlands to darker more mysterious forests of the summer.
The winter woodlands bring a sense of clarity and openness that helps to sweep the mind clean of tangled thoughts. The colder climate instills a sense of cleanliness and helps to sharpen the senses with it's cold crisp sounds.
Once the warmth of the summer sun begins to bath the trees, the natural world begins to change. Leaves unravel from ripe buds and insects begin to crawl and fly about the forest. The sun becomes shaded from reaching the forest floor and the forest darkens with a lush green canopy. The underbrush explodes with leaves and blossoms hiding the background from view. The birds and insects and other woodland creatures begin calling and chirping and working. The sounds on the air can become hypnotic, luring the explorer ever deeper into the woods.
With the darker forests come minds that wonder about the great mystery behind the leaves. What can be found just around the bend? Is it friend or foe? Is it the hunted or the hunter? The dark forests also bring warm humid life-rich environments that seem to feast on everything. There are worms in the wood, ticks in the grass, and mosquitos buzzing in our ears trying to steal a quick slurp of life. There is an unpleasant give and take on our sweaty skin, but the dark forests still draw us in.
We travel on foot into the dark regions of the earth as our mind ventures into the dark regions of our subconcious. There may be things in there that eat at us as well. It may take just a swat to chase it away, but there are also things in the woods that require more of a challenge to deal with. Sometimes we have to struggle and sometimes we have to rest before we can dispatch of the more difficult things that we may encounter while venturing through the dark forests of the mind. |
